1800's rock crushing structure, Goldstone Pass, MT/ID border, #g6
The name Goldstone Pass was no doubt coined in reference to the available gold thought to be in the ground for the taking. I think of “gold or was it just stone” as a metaphor for what really happened to a lot of miners in the gold rush days. There was quite a bit of “color” found at this spot in the Beaverhead Mountains of the Bitterroot Range. Enough for the miners to haul a massive rock crusher a piece at a time by mule-train build a structure to house it and then assemble the crusher. Some of the parts weighed many tons each. The flywheel for the crusher was a very large wooden wheel that was nicely made. In a few more years this structure will crumble the rest of the way and it will loose its historical character. |
